Zscaler architect identifies ‘Zero Trust debt’ in corporate security

Takayoshi Takaoka, an architect and evangelist at Zscaler, has identified a phenomenon he calls ‘Zero Trust debt’ through his work supporting over 250 companies in their digital transformations.

Despite many organizations implementing technologies such as Secure Access Service Edge (SASE), Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA), and Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), they often struggle to define their actual progress. Takaoka notes that simply adopting the correct technology is insufficient for true transformation if the underlying architecture and operational integration are not addressed.

Drawing from 25 years of experience across various security layers—including firewalls, proxies, and endpoint protection—Takaoka emphasizes that a successful transition to Zero Trust requires a holistic view encompassing networks, authentication, applications, data, and operations.
