Hungary unlocks €16.4 billion in frozen EU funds

Hungary has successfully met all European Union requirements to unlock frozen funds, according to Prime Minister Péter Magyar and Transport and Investment Minister Dávid Vitézy. The achievement allows the country to access approximately €16.4 billion in total EU funding, which includes €10 billion from the Recovery and Resilience Facility and €6.4 billion from Cohesion Funds.

To reach this milestone, the Hungarian Parliament passed over 100 laws during the summer aimed at strengthening judicial independence and enhancing anti-corruption measures. The government also revised its National Recovery Plan to include modernization efforts for the energy grid, railways, and rental housing stock.

Minister Vitézy confirmed that all 27 super-milestones and over 100 related conditions have been fulfilled. The release of these funds follows years of blockage due to concerns regarding the rule of law and financial oversight.
