ZSW launches pilot line for battery material scaling
The Center for Solar and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg (ZSW) has introduced 'Powder-Up!', a new pilot line designed to bridge the gap between laboratory research and industrial production of battery materials. As the first independent facility of its kind in Germany, it allows for the scaling of new materials from gram-scale samples to 100-kilogram batches under industrial-like conditions.
The 2,400-square-meter facility integrates over 135 pieces of equipment covering the entire process chain, including material synthesis, analysis, quality assurance, and electrochemical testing. Digital data collection throughout the process is intended to shorten development cycles and provide a foundation for AI-driven optimizations.
Research focuses include Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt (NMC) cathodes for high-performance lithium-ion batteries, Lithium-Iron-Phosphate (LFP), and sodium-ion battery solutions. The project was supported by funding from the German federal government and the state of Baden-Württemberg, with total investments reaching approximately 34 million euros.
