Zubin Potok mass graves: DNA confirms identities of three ‘Intellectual Group’ victims
Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti announced that DNA analysis from the International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP) has confirmed the identities of three victims recovered from mass graves in the Zubin Potok area. The remains were discovered in the Kalludër and Jabukë locations.
The identified individuals are members of the ‘Intellectual Group,’ including Idriz Rreci, Adem Beqiri, and Salih Mëziu. These individuals, primarily from Skenderaj and Mitrovica, were reportedly kidnapped and disappeared by Serbian forces on April 19, 1999. The identification provides answers to families who have been waiting for 27 years.
During excavations of the mass graves, at least 23 sets of human remains were found. The Kosovo Special Prosecution is currently investigating the case and has indicted four individuals on suspicion of war crimes against the civilian population. Authorities are awaiting further DNA reports to identify the remaining remains. Kurti has called on the United States, the European Union, and Great Britain to pressure Serbia to open its military archives to assist in the ongoing search for the 1,577 persons still listed as missing from the 1998-1999 war.
