Watermelon health benefits and tips highlighted on International Watermelon Day
International Watermelon Day on 3 August draws attention to the fruit’s nutritional value. Watermelon is about 92 % water and supplies vitamin C, vitamin A, potassium and magnesium while providing only around 30 kcal per 100 g, making it a low‑calorie option for hydration and weight management. Experts note that its high water content helps flush toxins, supports eye health, boosts immunity and can ease muscle soreness after exercise.
Freezing watermelon is safe but alters its texture: ice crystals expand and rupture cell walls, resulting in a softer, more watery consistency after thawing. The process, however, retains the fruit’s flavor and most nutrients, often better than leaving the fruit at room temperature.
The fruit has a long history, cultivated in Egypt for over 5 000 years, and the world’s heaviest watermelon, weighing 159 kg, was grown in the United States in 2013.
