Meta dominates AI smart glasses market amid rising privacy backlash

The global market for AI-powered smart glasses is experiencing rapid growth, with shipments reaching 4.2 million units in the first half of 2026, a 127% year-on-year increase. Meta currently dominates the sector, holding an 81.3% market share with 3.4 million units shipped during this period.

This surge has triggered significant privacy concerns and regulatory backlash. In the UK, various establishments including pub chains and theaters have implemented bans or restrictions on smart glasses. In Australia, local councils are considering similar measures in public spaces. Legal challenges are also mounting; a class-action lawsuit in the US alleges that Meta uses recorded footage to train its AI systems, involving private moments such as individuals changing clothes.

In response to these pressures, Meta is expected to unveil new smart glasses at its Connect 2026 event that lack cameras, focusing instead on audio and AI interaction via microphones. Other industry players are also moving; Snap Inc. announced its autonomous AR glasses, Snap Specs, priced at $2,195, for release this fall in the US, UK, and France. Meanwhile, Qualcomm has projected that advanced AR glasses with a 70-degree field of view could be available by late 2027.
