Zuenir Ventura, prominent Brazilian journalist and writer, dies at 95

Zuenir Ventura, a prominent Brazilian journalist, writer, and member of the Academia Brasileira de Letras (ABL), died on Tuesday at the age of 95 due to pneumonia. Born in Minas Gerais, Ventura had a career spanning over six decades, during which he worked for major outlets including O Globo, Jornal do Brasil, Veja, and Correio da Manhã.

Ventura was highly regarded for his investigative reporting on social and political issues. His most famous works include ‘1968: O Ano que Não Terminou’, which analyzed the political and cultural shifts during the military dictatorship, and ‘Cidade Partida’, a Jabuti Prize-winning report on urban violence in Rio de Janeiro. He also received the Esso and Vladimir Herzog awards for his coverage of the assassination of environmentalist Chico Mendes.

A member of the ABL since 2014, occupying the seat previously held by Ariano Suassuna, Ventura was a respected professor at UFRJ and Uerj. His funeral services were scheduled to take place at the ABL headquarters, with burial at the ABL Mausoleum in the São João Batista Cemetery.
