Zuffa Boxing strategy uses generic world titles to blur sanctioning body distinctions

Zuffa Boxing, TKO, and Paramount appear to be employing a strategic marketing approach by repeatedly omitting the specific names of recognized boxing sanctioning bodies when promoting fights. Instead of identifying organizations like the WBC, WBA, IBO, or WBO, promotional materials and announcements frequently use generic terms such as “world champion” or “world title.”

This pattern was observed following Aaron McKenna’s victory over Etinosa Oliha for the vacant IBF middleweight title, where promotional content referred to him as a “world champion” without mentioning the IBF. Similar instances have been noted in the promotion of Ryan Garcia versus Conor Benn and the announcement of Noel Mikaelian’s fight against Jai Opetaia.

Analysts suggest this may be a long-term strategy to blur the distinctions between established championship belts and Zuffa’s newer offerings. By presenting all titleholders under the same generic “world champion” label, the company may aim to elevate its own championships to the same level of prestige as the decades-old sanctioning organizations without having to build recognition from scratch.
