Zulia oil spills and gas leaks impact Lake Maracaibo

Environmentalists from the Fundación Azul Ambientalista have reported widespread oil spills and gas leaks affecting several municipalities in Zulia state, particularly along the eastern coast of Lake Maracaibo. The affected areas include Valmore Rodríguez, San Francisco, La Cañada de Urdaneta, Lagunillas, Cabimas, Miranda, and Baral.

Representatives state that the increase in oil industry operations, conducted without adequate infrastructure maintenance, has intensified these pollution events. Local fishermen report significant economic damage, noting that oil contaminates their nets and forces them to work further from the coast to avoid the spills. Additionally, fishermen face challenges due to unreliable electricity, which complicates the preservation of their catch.

Despite previous promises, officials claim that none of the water treatment plants intended to sanitize Lake Maracaibo are currently operational. Environmental advocates have also noted that a proposal to allocate 5% of oil dividends toward the basin's remediation has yet to be implemented. They emphasize the need for preventative measures and immediate intervention to stop leaks before they cause further damage to the local ecosystem and fauna.
