Zumiez reports wider second-quarter loss amid footwear weakness

Zumiez Inc. reported a wider net loss for its second quarter, ending August 1, driven by declining sales and weakness in the footwear sector. The company reported net sales of approximately $209 million, a 2.5 percent decrease from the same period in the previous fiscal year. Comparable sales also fell by 2.1 percent, reflecting reduced in-store traffic and soft back-to-school performance.

The company reported a net loss of 17 cents per share, which missed consensus analyst estimates of a 14-cent loss. While the results were largely in line with the company’s own guidance, the net loss of $2.7 million was significantly higher than the $1.0 million loss reported in the second quarter of the prior year.

Zumiez updated its third-quarter guidance to an earnings per share range of $0.00 to $0.10. During the quarter, the company utilized $23.2 million for share repurchases.
