Zurich Airport faces baggage delays and customs complexities
Travelers using Zurich Airport face logistical challenges regarding baggage handling and customs compliance. During peak autumn holiday periods, high traffic volumes and delayed aircraft arrivals have led to significant baggage delays. Ground handler Swissport noted that the convergence of delayed flights with regularly scheduled arrivals has strained operational resources and infrastructure, causing passengers to wait between one and 1.5 hours for luggage.
Additionally, German travelers using Zurich as a hub must navigate complex customs regulations. While Switzerland is part of the Schengen Area, it is not part of the European Union. This distinction means that travelers returning to Germany from non-EU destinations via Zurich must comply with two different sets of import rules for goods and souvenirs, which can lead to legal complications if not properly managed.
