Zurich Airport night flights face transparency demands

The association Fair in Air is demanding increased transparency regarding night flights at Zurich Airport following an analysis of flight movements during the summer of 2026. According to the association, there is a significant discrepancy between the official end of operations and actual departure times.

While airport regulations state that regular operations end at 23:00, with the period until 23:30 reserved solely for clearing unforeseen delays, data from June and July 2026 suggests otherwise. The association reported flight activity on all 61 evaluated days, noting that several long-haul flights regularly departed after midnight.

Fair in Air also criticized the airport's noise reporting methods. The association recorded over 300 flight movements after 23:00 in July, whereas the airport's noise bulletin only reported 36 cases. This discrepancy is attributed to the airport only recording flights after 23:30 that require special permits. Additionally, the association noted that public flight tracking data can be misleading, as flights are often marked as started during gate pushback, up to 40 minutes before actual takeoff. The group is calling for flight planning that ensures regular operations conclude reliably by 23:00 and for the complete disclosure of all movements and exact takeoff times after 23:00.
