Zurich and Graz implement parking fee increases and austerity measures
Zurich is implementing a new parking ordinance for residents in the blue zone. Starting in January, parking permit costs will be calculated based on vehicle weight and engine type. Electric vehicles will be charged 35 Rappen per kilogram of empty weight, while combustion engine vehicles will be charged 40 Rappen per kilogram. For a one-ton gasoline vehicle, the annual cost will rise from 300 Swiss francs to 400 Swiss francs, with heavier SUVs potentially reaching costs near 1,000 Swiss francs.
While residential costs rise, the city is reducing permit fees for commercial businesses with up to six license plates from 480 to 360 Swiss francs. However, a legal dispute remains regarding new permissions for commercial vehicles to park on sidewalks or in restricted areas.
In Graz, Austria, the city council has approved austerity measures including the discontinuation of the free Altstadtbim tram service in the old town starting in January. Additionally, parking fees in Graz are set to increase by up to 23 percent starting in 2027. Hourly rates in the blue zone will rise from 2.60 to 3.20 euros, while green zone rates will increase from 2.00 to 2.40 euros. The city expects these changes to generate approximately 4.5 million euros in annual revenue.
