Zurich faces environmental crisis amid record airport activity

Zurich is experiencing significant environmental challenges, including record-breaking heatwaves and historically low water levels in Lake Zurich. The Federal Office for the Environment (BAFU) has issued warnings regarding falling tree branches due to drought conditions, and some parks in Basel have been closed as a precaution.

Despite these local environmental pressures, Zurich Airport is seeing record-breaking flight activity. Data indicates that the average resident of Zurich flew 10,500 kilometers in 2024, an increase of 600 kilometers from the previous year. This individual flight distance results in approximately 3.2 tons of CO2 emissions, which is 1.5 times the total CO2 output of the city's combined heating, transport, and electricity usage.
