Zurich police recover live hand grenade from Limmat river

Bathers in Zurich discovered a live hand grenade at the bottom of the Limmat river in the Unterer Letten swimming area on Thursday, August 13, 2026. The object, identified as an active grenade originating from the former Yugoslavia, was located approximately one meter from the riverbank.

Following the report, the Zurich City Police and specialists from the Swiss Army's Explosive Ordnance Disposal (KAMIR) unit conducted diving operations to confirm the nature of the object. The area was cordoned off for safety while experts retrieved the device. The grenade was subsequently transported by the Forensic Institute of Zurich in a specialized vehicle and destroyed via a controlled explosion. No injuries were reported during the incident.
