Zurich implements strict electricity rules for boat owners

The city of Zurich has implemented strict new regulations regarding electricity usage for boat owners in its harbors. Following reports of repeated misuse, the city administration and water police have begun enforcing rules that prohibit leaving charging cables connected at docks.

City officials and the municipal utility EWZ cited safety concerns, noting that improper, incorrect, or defective cables and plugs have been identified. These issues pose a risk of tripping circuit breakers and causing power outages across entire harbor areas.

Boat owners face significant logistical challenges, as they must now arrive earlier to charge batteries and ensure cables are removed immediately after use. Violations may result in fines, the seizure of charging infrastructure, or, in cases of repeated offenses, the revocation of berthing rights.
