Zurich Street Parade draws 800,000 attendees amid drug safety concerns
Marek Krynski, a 23‑year‑old mathematics and philosophy student, launched the Street Parade in Zurich in 1992. Inspired by Berlin's techno scene, his idea turned the city’s once‑quiet nightlife into the world’s largest open‑air electronic music festival, now attracting up to a million visitors each August.
Health officials warn that the event’s massive crowds also bring a surge in drug use. Dominique Schori of the Drogeninformationszentrum (DIZ) reports that many MDMA pills sold at the parade contain dangerously high doses—often over 200 mg, sometimes double the typical safe amount. Some pills are mislabeled and may contain other substances such as cathinone derivatives. To mitigate risks, the Saferparty initiative provides free drug‑checking services at Bürkliplatz from 13:00 onward, advising revelers to avoid experimenting with unknown substances.
