Zurich tram operator tests external airbags to prevent pedestrian fatalities
Verkehrsbetriebe Zurich (VBZ) is testing the installation of external airbags on its trams to protect pedestrians following a rise in fatal accidents. In collaboration with manufacturer Alstom, the technology aims to minimize impact force during collisions.
The initiative follows a significant increase in transit-related emergencies. In 2023, Zurich recorded 675 tram-related accidents, the highest number in six years. Many incidents occurred when trams were starting, stopping, or during door operations. Public concern intensified in March 2024 after a series of accidents resulted in three deaths within a single week, prompting city council members to demand immediate technical solutions to prevent further loss of life.
