ZUS reports stable Social Insurance Fund status in Poland

The Polish Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) reports a stable financial situation for the Social Insurance Fund (FUS). In the first half of 2026, contributions to social insurance reached nearly 205 billion PLN, a 7.8 percent increase compared to the same period in 2025. The fund's ability to cover its expenditures with contribution income stood at 82.2 percent for the first half of the year, rising to 82.9 percent in the second quarter.

Foreign workers play a significant role in supporting the system. As of late June 2026, foreigners accounted for 8.2 percent of all insured individuals, totaling approximately 1.34 million people. Ukrainian citizens constitute the largest group of foreign contributors, representing 67.2 percent of all foreign insured persons, followed by citizens of Belarus.

Political discussions regarding pension reforms continue, specifically concerning the introduction of seniority-based pensions (emerytury stażowe). While some political groups propose allowing retirement based on years of service rather than age, ZUS President Liwiusz Laska has noted the potential high costs and the need to determine how such a system would be financed.
