Poland sets 2027 minimum wage and prepares ZUS reforms

Poland is implementing several significant economic and social security changes scheduled for 2027. A government regulation has officially set the minimum wage at 4,950 PLN gross per month and the minimum hourly rate at 32.30 PLN, effective January 1, 2027. This increase is expected to affect approximately 1.58 million workers.

The Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) is also undergoing reforms. New rules for 2027 will allow doctors to issue sick leave (L4) for only one employment title if a patient can work in one profession but not another. Additionally, funeral grant procedures will be simplified through electronic applications via the PUE system, and the payout period will be shortened to 14 days.

Regarding pensions, discussions continue on the mechanism for indexation to better support low-income seniors. Current data shows a wide disparity in pension amounts, with some receiving record highs while others receive amounts as low as 39 groszy. ZUS President Liwiusz Laska noted that contributions from Ukrainian citizens, totaling 7.4 billion PLN in 2026, significantly support the Social Insurance Fund (FUS), though he emphasized this does not replace the need for domestic demographic policies.
