ZUS and KRUS implement updates to pensions and funeral benefits
Poland's social security institutions, ZUS and KRUS, are implementing several updates to benefits and reporting. The funeral allowance has increased to 7,000 PLN, with a new 14-day payment deadline and planned electronic processing for 2027. ZUS confirmed that foreign nationals insured in Poland can claim this allowance for funerals held abroad, including in Ukraine, provided costs are documented.
In September 2026, millions of seniors will receive the 14th pension. The maximum amount is 1,978.49 PLN gross, applicable to those with monthly benefits below 2,900 PLN gross. For those above this threshold, the amount decreases following a ‘złotówka za złotówkę’ rule, with no payment if the calculated amount is below 50 PLN. Payments are automatic and exempt from bailiff seizures.
Recent ZUS data for the first half of 2026 shows a 2.7% decrease in medical certificates, though the average duration of sick leave remains high. Common causes include musculoskeletal disorders and mental health issues. Additionally, upcoming pension indexation is expected to increase various supplements, such as the nursing allowance, by approximately 4.36%.
