Zustissia film depicts Beniamino Zuncheddu's 33-year wrongful imprisonment
The film ‘Zustissia’, directed by Francesco Piras, will be released in Italian theaters on October 15 following a preview in Sardinia on October 8. The film dramatizes the case of Beniamino Zuncheddu, a former shepherd who spent 33 years in prison for a triple homicide in Sinnai, Sardinia, in 1991 before his innocence was officially recognized in 2024.
Based on the book ‘Io sono innocente’, the movie features Fabrizio Ferracane as Zuncheddu and Michele Riondino as his lawyer, Mauro Trogu. The cast also includes Geppi Cucciari, who portrays Irene Testa, a treasurer for the Partito Radicale and a guarantor of detainees' rights in Sardinia.
During a press conference in Rome, Zuncheddu noted that despite his exoneration, he has not received an apology from institutions for his decades of wrongful imprisonment. While he received 30,000 euros for prison conditions, he received no compensation for the wrongful conviction itself. The Partito Radicale is currently promoting the ‘Zuncheddu law’ to ensure provisional compensation for those acquitted after lengthy legal processes.
