Zustìssia film explores major Italian judicial error

The film ‘Zustìssia’, directed by Francesco Piras, is being screened at the Teatro Comunale in Catanzaro. The production explores the profound human consequences of judicial errors, focusing on a true story involving Beniamino Zuncheddu, a Sardinian shepherd who was wrongfully imprisoned for murder for over twenty years.

Starring Fabrizio Ferracane as Zuncheddu and Michele Riondino as his lawyer, Mauro Trogu, the film addresses the tension between justice and human dignity. The screening is accompanied by a debate on October 17 involving members of the Catanzaro Bar Association to discuss judicial errors, the necessity of legal guarantees, and the current state of the Italian prison system.

Writer Lisa Nur Sultan noted that the project aims to restore dignity to Zuncheddu, emphasizing that while justice was eventually served, the delay caused irreparable harm. The film also touches upon the systemic issues within Italian prisons, describing them as environments that can border on torture rather than rehabilitation.
