Zvërnec development protests analyzed as domestic grievance

An analysis of recent protests in Tirana suggests that the movement centered around the development of Zvërnec was driven by domestic grievances rather than the ecological narratives promoted by international media.

The author argues that what American leftist media framed as a ‘War of the Flamingos’ was actually an ideological export used to fuel political battles in the United States. While the flamingo became an emotional symbol to critique ‘greedy capitalism,’ the actual participation of Albanians in the protests stemmed from long-standing issues regarding public space management, transparency, and institutional trust.

The text posits that the attempt to frame the issue through a neomarksist ecological lens failed to account for the economic reality of Albanian society, which is described as being fundamentally pro-capitalist and pro-development following decades of communist isolation.
