Zwolle Mayor allows pro-Palestinian protest on October 7
Zwolle Mayor Peter Snijders has announced that he will not ban or relocate a pro-Palestinian demonstration scheduled for October 7 on the Grote Markt. The group, Zwolle4Palestine, has intentionally chosen this date, which marks the third anniversary of the Hamas attacks on Israel.
While acknowledging the sensitivity of the date and the potential to increase societal tensions, Snijders stated that the right to demonstrate and freedom of expression are fundamental principles that limit his authority to intervene. He noted that under the Public Manifestations Act, a mayor can only impose restrictions to protect health, traffic, or prevent disorder, and currently sees no reason to expect such issues.
The mayor has maintained contact with the local Jewish community, who reportedly understand that the demonstration is a part of the democratic process. Although the city council raised concerns regarding the timing, the organization declined requests to move the event to a different date.
