Zwolle to establish permanent slavery history memorial

The city of Zwolle is developing a permanent memorial to commemorate its history regarding slavery. Three artists are currently working on sketch designs, which are scheduled to be presented in November. Following the presentation, residents will be invited to provide feedback on the designs, sharing what resonates with them and identifying important elements to ensure the monument reflects the community's values.

The project aims to address both the trans-Atlantic slave trade and the history of slavery in regions surrounding present-day Indonesia. This dual focus intends to make various facets of colonial history visible within the city. The municipality noted that Zwolle was historically connected to the colonial system through the Dutch East India Company (VOC), the Dutch West India Company (WIC), and through individuals who served as administrators or plantation owners.

To ensure a careful and inclusive process, the municipality is collaborating with an arts working group that includes descendants of enslaved people and representatives from affected communities. The goal is for the monument to serve as a site for reflection, remembrance, and connection, while prompting discussions on freedom, equality, and human bonds.
