Zwolle to restrict driving in city center to curb nuisance motorists

The municipality of Zwolle has announced plans to restrict vehicle access in certain city center areas to combat nuisance driving and improve safety. Starting next year, the local government intends to make hospitality squares, such as Nieuwe Markt and Bethlehemkerkplein, car-free at designated times.

To support these measures and address unsafe traffic behavior, the municipality has allocated 300,000 euros in the 2027 budget. The initiative follows previous trials where streets were blocked to prevent drivers from performing maneuvers like driving in figure-eight patterns.

Local hospitality business owners have expressed support for the decision, citing safety concerns for staff and patrons. Jan Briek, owner of The Dublin House, noted that aggressive driving and sudden acceleration have led to intimidating situations and conflicts in crowded areas like Bethlehemkerkplein.
