Zywiec Co-cathedral marks over 500 years of historical significance

The Co-cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Zywiec holds over 500 years of history, serving as a significant cultural and architectural monument in Poland. Its origins date back to the first half of the 15th century, with major expansions beginning in 1515 under the patronage of Wawrzyniec and Jan Komorowski.

The structure features a blend of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles resulting from various reconstructions following fires and lightning strikes. Notable historical elements include a late Gothic altar from approximately 1500, which was acquired from Buda after the Ottoman occupation and reportedly purchased using salt as currency.

The cathedral is linked to several prominent historical figures and events, including the Komorowski, Vasa, Wielopolski, and Habsburg families. Physical traces of history remain within its walls, such as cannonballs from the Swedish Deluge embedded in the tower and crypts located beneath the floor. The site also served as a place of prayer for former King Jan Kazimierz.
