In late September 2026, the 1. FC Köln Joint Committee expressed unified support for head coach René Wagner. President Jörn Stobbe characterized Wagner as a “long-term FC coach,” dismissing rumors of an imminent dismissal or potential agreements with other candidates like Horst Steffen. By late October, however, supporter dissatisfaction grew following a scoreless draw against FC Schalke 04. Protests began during the match, with fans directing chants of “Wagner raus” (Wagner out) and loud whistling at the 38-year-old manager. Wagner acknowledged the emotional impact of the reaction, stating that the whistling was “difficult for the players,” and emphasized the need for offensive improvement. He noted that the team must find ways to force goals, particularly with strikers Thijs Dallinga and Ragnar Ache currently sidelined due to injury. While player Saïd El Mala defended Wagner, suggesting fan frustration was not directly related to the coach, teammate Luca Waldschmidt criticized the team’s sluggish second-half performance. ~~Wagner described the result as “just 0:0” but acknowledged that the single point felt insufficient given the club’s high expectations.~~ Despite the unrest, sporting director Thomas Kessler has offered Wagner “full ~~backing.”~~ backing,” though this support appears contingent on upcoming results. Kessler emphasized that upcoming matches against Union Berlin in both the DFB-Pokal and the Bundesliga are critical for regaining fan ~~trust through success.~~ trust. The club currently sits in eleventh place, two points above the relegation zone.
