1. FC Union Berlin has faced a challenging start to the Bundesliga season under new head coach Mauro Lustrinelli. In the first three matches, the club secured only one point and conceded ten goals, including a 0-4 loss to Bayer Leverkusen and a 1-3 defeat against Schalke 04. Lustrinelli has called for patience from supporters, comparing the team’s development to a toddler learning to ride a bicycle. He noted that the squad is still struggling to master an offensive style of play and a four-man defensive line. The team currently sits in 16th place and is preparing for a match against FC Bayern München while missing players such as Oliver Burke and Andrej Ilic. Ahead of the clash with Bayern München, Lustrinelli emphasized that resilience is required to overcome setbacks. However, the match resulted in a 0-7 loss at the Allianz Arena, marking the heaviest defeat in the club’s Bundesliga history. Following the loss, Lustrinelli reiterated that the team is struggling to find stability and expressed hope that the upcoming three-week international break will allow players to recharge their energy and mental focus. In the aftermath of the heavy defeat, the club utilized social media to employ humor, jokingly blaming Barcelona player Lamine Yamal for the result. Following the international break, the club’s struggles have continued, having earned only one point from four matches and conceding 17 goals. However, Union Berlin recently secured their first victory of the season with a 1-0 win against SV Elversberg. Livan Burcu scored the decisive goal in the 81st minute, providing relief for Lustrinelli following the team's difficult early campaign. Burcu celebrated the goal with sporting director Horst Heldt, citing Heldt's daily motivation.
