The European Artistic Gymnastics Championships were slated for 13–23 August 2024 in Arena Zagreb, marking the first time the event would be held in Croatia. Organisers announced a record-size programme with 640 athletes from 43 nations, senior and junior competitions running side-by-side, and a family-friendly opening ceremony featuring local performers. As the event approached, preparations reached their final stages with the installation of approximately 1.25 million euros worth of equipment to ensure athlete safety. However, the competition faced political tension due to visa disputes. The Russian Gymnastics Federation reported that while 56 members received visas, nine others—including Olympic gold medalist Angelina Melnikova and Olympic champion Viktoria Listunova—were denied entry by the Croatian embassy in Moscow. The Federation criticized these decisions as a ~~"dangerous precedent"~~ “dangerous precedent” regarding the principle of equal conditions for national federations. When the dates arrived, the championships proceeded with 187 male and 166 female gymnasts—the largest roster in the event’s history. The field included Olympic and World medalists such as Italy’s Alice D’Amato, Manila Esposito, and Greece’s Eleftherios Petrounias, as well as Ireland’s Rhys McClenaghan and newly naturalised Croatian Ilija Kovtun, alongside home-grown stars Tin Srbić and Filip Ude. The competition delivered elite performances for Croatian fans while maintaining the festival atmosphere promised earlier.
