2026 Ballon d'Or: Ceremony results and ~~winners~~ subsequent debates

The 70th Ballon d’Or ceremony, held at the London Palladium, concluded with Harry Kane named the men’s winner. This marks the first time an English player has received the award since Michael Owen in 2001, and the first time a Bayern Munich player has won it since Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in 1981. Kane’s victory follows an exceptional season where he scored 73 goals and provided 8 assists in 65 appearances for both club and country. His campaign included winning the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal, as well as leading England to a third-place finish at the 2026 World Cup. In the final voting, Kane finished ahead of Kylian Mbappé, Lamine Yamal, and Rodri. In addition to the Ballon d’Or, Kane received the Gerd Müller Trophy for best striker. The ceremony, organized by France Football, also marked the first time the event was hosted outside of France. Spain saw significant success, with Lamine Yamal winning the Kopa Trophy—marking his third consecutive year winning the award for best young player—and Unai Simón receiving the Yachine Trophy. Luis de la Fuente was named Men’s Coach of the Year. Other individual honors included Vicky López as Women’s Talent of the Year, Katko Cog as Best Goalkeeper, and Bukayo Saka receiving the Socrates Award for his charitable work. Paris Saint-Germain was named Men’s Club of the Year for the second consecutive year. In the women’s category, Alexia Putellas secured her third Ballon d’Or, and FC Barcelona was crowned Women’s Club of the Year. Following the ceremony, debates have emerged regarding player rankings and the influence of commercial interests. While Paris Saint-Germain won Men’s Club of the Year, none of their players reached the top five in individual rankings, with Khvitcha Kvaratskhelia placing sixth.
