India is scheduled to host the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 12–13, 2026. This summit marks the first gathering of the group under its expanded 10-member format, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE, and Indonesia. To prioritize institutional integration, India has opted to pause further expansion of the bloc. Under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India aims to promote the interests of the Global South by focusing on digital technology and alternative financial architectures. The summit's theme is “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” Key challenges for the presidency include managing internal divergences regarding regional conflicts in West Asia and balancing the interests of members such as Iran and the UAE. ~~While consensus on geopolitical issues like Ukraine remains difficult, there is movement toward financial insulation.~~ Diplomatic developments ~~include the potential visit of~~ suggest Chinese President Xi ~~Jinping,~~ Jinping may attend the summit, which would mark his first trip to India in approximately seven years.
