Overview

In late July 2026, heavy rain from Typhoon Meishake caused reservoir breaches in Guangxi’s Heng County, flooding 14 cities and displacing millions. Authorities ordered rapid clearance of temporary shelters, forcing hundreds of survivors to leave with no relocation plan, sparking public anger and criticism of the flood‑response.

On 3 August, China warned of further downpours across the north‑west and south‑west. In Shaanxi, nearly 88 000 residents were moved from high‑risk zones, while in Sichuan an additional 40 000 people were evacuated, bringing the province’s total relocations since mid‑July to over 922 000. No casualties were reported, but eight geological disasters were recorded, and a red flash‑flood warning was issued for central Chongqing. Meteorologists also noted that Typhoon Dolphin could affect the east coast later in the week.

A further update on 3 August confirmed that Shaanxi’s evacuation total rose to more than 115 000, after an additional 18 000 people were relocated, while Sichuan’s 40 000‑person evacuations continued across 20 cities. The national forecaster kept an orange‑level precipitation alert for much of the country, and the Natural Resources Ministry maintained a red flash‑flood alert for central Chongqing. No casualties have been reported, and authorities remain on alert for possible impacts from Typhoon Dolphin.
