Chinese tennis player Zheng Qinwen won the 2026 China Open WTA 1000 title in Beijing, becoming the first Chinese player to achieve this feat. Competing as a wildcard following recovery from elbow surgery that had dropped her ranking to as low as 160, the 24-year-old Olympic champion defeated Mirra Andreeva in the final with a score of 7-5, 6-4. This victory marks Zheng’s first WTA 1000 title and her sixth career title on the WTA Tour. Her tournament run was characterized by high offensive output, including a record 219 winners. During the final, Zheng demonstrated resilience by saving three set points at 4-5 in the first set to clinch the set and eventually the match. Her path to the title included victories over Elina Svitolina and Elise Mertens. The win earns her approximately 1.15 million USD in prize money and 1,000 ranking points. Following this win, Zheng is projected to climb back toward the top 30 of the WTA rankings, potentially reaching the 23rd position. Mirra Andreeva, the 19-year-old Russian and recent Roland Garros winner, finished as the runner-up. Despite the loss, her performance throughout the tournament secured her a career-high world ranking of number three. Former player Elena Dementieva praised Andreeva’s performance and mental strength, noting her exceptional physical condition. In the aftermath of the tournament, both Zheng and Andreeva have indicated changes to their upcoming schedules, with both players withdrawing from the Wuhan Open due to fatigue and injury concerns.
