The 2026 UCI Road World Championships in Montreal concluded with several historic performances. In the women’s elite road race, Demi Vollering secured her first career world title, completing a dominant season that included victories at the Tour de France Femmes and the Giro d’Italia Women. Following a decisive attack approximately 38.5 kilometers from the finish on a technical circuit featuring the Côte Camillien-Houde, Vollering survived a period where her lead was nearly neutralized. She won a dramatic sprint against Poland’s Kasia Niewiadoma (silver), who noted that cramps affected her performance in the final meters, and Italy’s Elisa Longo Borghini (bronze). Vollering’s victory was marked by a significant crash approximately 95 kilometers into the race, which forced several high-profile withdrawals, including defending champion Magdeleine Vallieres and Swedish rider Caroline Andersson, the latter of whom was hospitalized with a broken collarbone. Following the race, the UCI sanctioned Vollering for “using a non-compliant position or point of support on the bicycle,” issuing a 1,000 Swiss franc fine, a yellow card, and a 25-point deduction in UCI rankings; however, the penalty did not affect her title or podium standing. In the men’s elite road race, American Brandon McNulty claimed the rainbow jersey, marking the first time a U.S. athlete has won the elite men’s road race since 1993. McNulty finished with a time of 6:17:04, narrowly beating Australia’s Michael Matthews (second) and the Netherlands’ Mathieu van der Poel (third).
