The 2026 literary award season has progressed through initial longlist announcements to the selection of finalists for major prizes. The finalists include two former winners, James and Stuart, who both have the opportunity to become only the fifth authors in history to win the award twice. The shortlisted works represent a mix of genres, including dystopian fiction, campus satire, and historical fiction. Judges emphasized the ‘very human’ quality of the selected works, noting their capacity to challenge certainties and resist replication by artificial intelligence. The winner will be announced on November 9 in London and will receive a trophy and 50,000 pounds, while each finalist receives 2,500 pounds.
