Preparations for the 115th National Games in Taoyuan City are entering their final stages ahead of the scheduled October 17 to 22 competition period. The event will feature 32 competition categories across 43 venues, including new disciplines such as powerlifting, freediving, aerobic gymnastics, disc golf, and unicycling. To celebrate the occasion, Taoyuan City has unveiled eight unique trophies designed by various artists. These trophies incorporate local imagery like the Taiwan blue magpie and peach blossoms, utilizing traditional techniques such as ‘gold-stitching and silk-dotting’ alongside woodcraft and lighting design. In Nantou County, the arrival of the National Games torch at the local stadium has signaled the commencement of regional preparations, with a delegation of 508 athletes and coaches set to compete across 25 disciplines. On October 13, a four-day torch relay commenced, covering 13 districts in Taoyuan, including Guishan, Luzhu, Dayuan, and Fuxing. The relay route spans urban, coastal, and mountainous areas to showcase the local landscape. Unlike major international games, this biennial event focuses on sports popularization and mass participation, with participants ranging in age from 6-year-old children to 88-year-old seniors. Local authorities aim to integrate the games with regional culture and tourism to boost local vitality. The National Games of Taiwan officially commenced on October 17 at the Taoyuan Municipal Comprehensive Gymnasium, featuring over 13,000 athletes. The opening ceremony included remarks from President Lai Ching-te, Premier Cho Jung-tai, and Taoyuan Mayor Cheng Shan-cheng. President Lai emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting sports at all stages of life, noting that the newly established Ministry of Sports aims to integrate resources to enhance grassroots, competitive, and professional athletics. During the ceremony, MLB player Lee Chang-yu used a baseball bat to ignite the games’ flame.
