The Toronto Maple Leafs opened their 2026-27 season with a 3-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens, marking the NHL debut of first-overall pick Gavin McKenna. Following an initial scoreless three-game stretch, McKenna recorded his first career goal and assist during an overtime win against the Nashville Predators. However, his playing time has fluctuated due to a developmental strategy described by insider Elliotte Friedman as a “controlled introduction to the NHL.” McKenna, who entered the league as the top-ranked prospect following a productive tenure at Penn ~~State,~~ State and the Medicine Hat Tigers, has faced varying levels of involvement. While some analysts suggested a third-line assignment to aid his adjustment, the team has focused on placing him in positions to succeed. During a 4-5 overtime loss to the Buffalo Sabres, head coach Jim Hiller faced scrutiny for benching McKenna during the third period and overtime. Hiller attributed the decision to coaching logistics and consecutive penalties, stating, “I probably should have got him out there early in the third. I didn’t. So I’ll talk to him about that.” McKenna recently contributed to a 3-1 victory over the San Jose Sharks, scoring a third-period power-play goal to break a tie. The game featured the first professional matchup between the top two 2026 NHL Draft selections, McKenna and San Jose’s Ivar Stenberg. The Maple Leafs followed this with a 6-2 road victory against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
