The 2026 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), or Shanghai Ranking, continues to be led by American institutions. Harvard University holds the first position, followed by Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Anglo-Saxon institutions maintain a dominant presence in the top tier, with the first 12 spots occupied exclusively by universities from the United States and the United Kingdom. This top 12 includes the University of Cambridge (4th), UC Berkeley (5th), Princeton (6th), Oxford, Columbia University, the University of Chicago, and the California Institute of Technology. In continental Europe, Université Paris-Saclay in France is the highest-ranked institution at 13th, followed by ETH Zurich in Switzerland at 19th. France shows significant scientific presence with 27 institutions in the top 1,000, including Université PSL (33rd), Sorbonne Université (55th), and Université Paris Cité (57th). The French Ministry of Higher Education attributes this visibility to consolidation policies implemented since 2018. Additionally, Université Bourgogne Europe has maintained its position in the 701–800 bracket for ten consecutive years. China continues to show growth, with 16 universities appearing in the top 100, notably Tsinghua University at 18th and Peking University at 22nd. Chinese media frame this performance as evidence of a “methodical ascent” driven by investments in artificial intelligence, quantum technology, and biotechnology. In the Balkan region, the University of Belgrade is ranked in the 501–600 range, while the University of Ljubljana and the University of Zagreb are both in the 601–700 range. No universities from North Macedonia were included in the top 1,000.
