Disney’s *The Mandalorian & Grogu* opened on 22 May 2026, marking the franchise’s first theatrical release in seven years. Directed by Jon Favreau and starring Pedro Pascal, the film features Sigourney Weaver, Jeremy Allen White, and Martin Scorsese. While the film earned a solid domestic opening, it ultimately became the lowest-grossing live-action Star Wars film, with a global total of approximately $345 million against a $165 million production budget. This performance fell short of the $500–$600 million needed to break even, prompting concerns regarding the commercial viability of moving serialized streaming content to theaters. Despite the box office struggle, the film reached the number one spot on the DEG Digital Entertainment Group’s top 10 digital sales and rentals chart for the week ending 16 August. During a recent earnings call, Disney CEO Josh D'Amaro addressed the underwhelming theatrical performance, noting that investments in core brands drive growth in other sectors, such as retail sales and increased attendance at theme park attractions like the Millennium Falcon ride. As the film transitions to streaming, it officially arrived on Disney+ on 2 September 2026. In India, the film became available on JioHotstar on the same date, offering both English and Hindi audio. The streaming launch was accompanied by the release of the ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu Official Podcast’, hosted by Favreau and Dave Filoni, which features cast members including Pedro Pascal and Sigourney Weaver. Additionally, the film has been released on home video in 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray, alongside the ‘LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian’ animated special. In Japan, new merchandise related to the film is being released through major retail channels. Starting 16 September, Skater will launch lifestyle goods, such as bamboo chopsticks and acrylic cups, at the ‘Disney THE MARKET 2026’ event in JR Kyoto Isetan.
