The NBA has finalized its 2026-27 regular-season schedule, set to tip off on 20 October. Opening night features a tripleheader on NBC and Peacock: the Boston Celtics at the Detroit Pistons, the Philadelphia 76ers at the New York Knicks, and the Oklahoma City Thunder at the San Antonio Spurs. The Knicks, the reigning champions, will raise their championship banner during the 76ers matchup, which also marks LeBron James’ debut for Philadelphia in his 24th season. James officially signed a two-year, $8 million deal for the league minimum with the 76ers, joining a roster that recently acquired Jaylen Brown—via a trade involving Paul George and draft picks—and already features stars such as Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid, and VJ Edgecombe. During the team’s 2026 Media Day in Camden, New Jersey, James emphasized his championship ambitions, stating, “I didn’t leave my family to lose in the second round.” He noted that his decision was influenced by his relationship with Maxey and a desire to help Joel Embiid secure a title, adding that he had previously considered playing for the New York Knicks before their title win. He further remarked that greatness requires being “comfortable with being uncomfortable.” While James expressed satisfaction with the move, some reports suggest the Knicks may have declined interest from his camp during free agency to maintain roster stability. Following the roster changes, the 76ers announced a multiyear partnership with Bloom Energy to serve as the team’s jersey patch sponsor, replacing Crypto.com. James’ arrival has driven significant economic impact; StubHub reports 76ers tickets are selling seven times faster than last year, and Fanatics reported that July saw the highest sales of James merchandise in his 24-year career. ~~The team is also introducing aesthetic updates, including the return of black throwback jerseys, and will host its annual Blue-White Scrimmage at the Xfinity Mobile Arena on 3 October.~~
