Democrat Sherrod Brown has won the special election for the U.S. Senate seat in Ohio, completing a political comeback following his 2024 defeat. Brown, 73, reclaimed the seat he previously held for 18 years. With approximately 87% to 89% of ballots counted, Brown secured approximately roughly 48.6% of the vote, defeating Republican Jon Husted, who received 46.5%, according to the Associated Press. The special election was held to fill the remainder of the term originally held by Vice President JD Vance, who resigned to assume his current office. Husted had previously been appointed to the seat by Governor Mike DeWine in January 2025. The race was among the most expensive in the country. While high profile campaigning from Donald Trump and JD Vance supported Husted, the crypto focused PAC Fairshake also invested heavily in Husted’s campaign. Brown focused his campaign on economic issues, specifically inflation and the interests of working class voters. Husted defended his record but faced criticism regarding his support for nuclear power and data center legislation. Brown will serve the remainder of the term through 2029. 2029, making him eligible for reelection in 2028. His victory is viewed as a significant boost for Democrats in their efforts to retake control of the Senate.
