2026 World Wrestling Championships in Astana

Overview

The 2026 Senior World Wrestling Championships are being held at the Barys Arena in Astana, Kazakhstan, from October 24 to November 1. Organized by United World Wrestling (UWW), the event features approximately 900 to 1,000 athletes competing across 30 weight classes in Greco-Roman, women’s, and men’s freestyle wrestling. The tournament was relocated to Astana from Manama, Bahrain, due to “geopolitical uncertainties and international travel conditions.” In the Greco-Roman 82 kg division, Turkey’s Yüksel Sarıçiçek secured a silver medal. Competing in the senior category for the first time, Sarıçiçek reached the final by defeating China’s Halishan Bahejiang (7-5), Qatar’s Shahin Eidimohammad Badaghimofrad (10-2), and Akzhol Makhmudov of Kyrgyzstan (6-0). In the final, he lost 7-1 to Iran’s Gholamreza Javad Farokhisenjani, who secured his second consecutive world title. Following the ceremony, Sarıçiçek cited inexperience in the final stages but expressed determination to pursue gold at the 2027 World Championships. Turkish veteran Rıza Kayaalp, pursuing a sixth world title in the 130 kg category, was eliminated in the quarter-finals after a 5-3 loss to Finland’s Matti Elias Kuosmanen. As Kuosmanen did not reach the final, Kayaalp was ineligible for the repechage. Teammate İbrahim Tığcı remains in contention for a bronze medal in the 97 kg class following his advancement into the repechage rounds. Other Turkish competitors, including Cengiz Arslan, Ömer Halis Recep, Enes Başar, and Ahmet Yılmaz, have been eliminated. Iran has seen significant success in the Greco-Roman categories. Following Farokhisenjani’s gold in the 82 kg class, Saeid Esmaeili reached the final in the 67 kg category after defeating opponents from the Netherlands, China, Kazakhstan, and Azerbaijan. His victory over Olympic bronze medalist Hasrat Jafarov has placed Iran near a team championship due to tight point standings with Azerbaijan.
