Indonesia and Malaysia anti-drug campaign July-August 2026 enforcement updates

Indonesia’s nationwide anti-drug drive accelerated through July and August 2026. Police data released on 30 June recorded 1,485 arrests and more than 215 kg of narcotics seized in Central Java. By 1 July the police chief reported 24,837 drug cases in the first half of the year, with 3.1 t of methamphetamine, 4.1 t of cannabis, 763,000 ecstasy pills and 59 million hard-drug tablets confiscated. A 3.37-t cannabis haul intercepted in Gresik on 2 July led to a bilateral enforcement agreement with Russia. Subsequent operations seized meth and ecstasy at Bakauheni port and across North Sumatra, Lombok, East Kalimantan, Malang and Kediri, while Instagram-based synthetic-tobacco and meth rings were busted in Jakarta on 5 July. A prison-linked network yielded 10.9 t of meth, ketamine and MDMA in Bengkalis on 9 July, and the navy stopped shipments at Juanda Airport. By 20 July the cumulative haul exceeded 12.3 t, with over 1,259 suspects arrested and assets frozen worth IDR 16.5 trillion. Education drives launched in Pemalang and Banjarbaru and troops destroyed about 5,000 cannabis plants in Papua. In late July and early August, enforcement continued with the arrest of two women in Balikpapan for attempting to transport 1.041 kg of methamphetamine from North Kalimantan. On 29 July, a 39-year-old Malaysia Airlines pilot was detained at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport after customs discovered approximately 25-26 kg of narcotics, including over 70,000 ecstasy pills, methamphetamine, and cocaine. Malaysia responded by deploying a Bukit Aman narcotics team to Jakarta and adding 50 General Operations Force personnel to Kuala Lumpur International Airport to tighten security. Between 31 July and 6 August, police in the Riau Islands seized 376 g of methamphetamine discarded at sea, resulting in 11 arrests. By late August, enforcement intensified through major maritime and regional operations.
