Senegal is preparing to host the 2026 Youth Olympic Games, the first Olympic‑branded event on the African continent. The International Olympic Committee confirmed Dakar, along together with the new city of Diamniadio and the coastal resort of Saly, will provide upgraded venues, an athlete village and sustainable sports facilities. The program will feature a gender‑balanced roster across 35 sports, including urban disciplines such as skateboarding, breaking, sport climbing and surfing, as surfing. Less than 100 days remain before the opening ceremony approaches. ceremony. Organisers are finalising major upgrades to venues in Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly, stressing that the infrastructure will leave a lasting economic and social legacy. On 26 July 2026 the Police nationale staged a citizen hike that attracted over a thousand walkers, while the Ministry of Environment launched a beach‑plastic collection operation along the Hann and Dalifort coasts under the SOLUPLAST project, showcasing a clean, sustainable host city. Amid these preparations, employees of the state broadcaster Radio Télévision Sénégalaise (RTS) announced a potential strike and boycott of the Games' media coverage. Workers say the suspension of a previously signed enterprise agreement by RTS director Pape Alé Niang violates their rights and have issued demands for the agreement's reinstatement and better working conditions. Union leaders warned that without a resolution, RTS could halt broadcasting of the Games scheduled for 31 October – 13 November 2026, raising concerns that labor labour disputes could impact affect the visibility of the historic event. The two developments illustrate a dual narrative: the logistical and symbolic effort to deliver the Youth Olympics in Dakar, and the domestic labour tensions that could affect how the event is presented to both national and international audiences.
