Relief efforts after the magnitude‑7.1 Reiwa 8 Kumamoto earthquake on 28 July 2026 have continued to expand. Nagano Prefecture sent a joint disaster‑support team—initially four staff, later reinforced by six additional responders from Matsumoto, Azumino, Nakano and Iiyama—to assist shelter operations in Ujiyama, and Nagoya City supplied two water‑tank trucks and 11 staff to provide drinking water in cut‑off areas. Local volunteers, such as farmer Kiyoshi Mori, helped move a combine from a destroyed warehouse in Hiyagawa, and a childcare facility in Yatsushiro opened its shower to residents, offering a reliable water source amid outages. Donation drives have been launched by various prefectures and organisations, and many community groups continue to collect and distribute supplies. Local initiatives persisted, including a celebrity contribution of ¥10 million, the opening of a shower facility for Yatsushiro residents, and volunteer clean‑up actions. Saisei Kumamoto Hospital reported 176 emergency admissions—more than double normal—with two fatalities. Authorities reiterated warnings about deep‑vein thrombosis, urging evacuees to stay mobile, stay hydrated and use compression stockings.
