The 87th edition of the Volta a Portugal opened on 5 August 2026 with a 6.5-km individual time trial in Lisbon’s Belém district. Danish rider Julius Johansen (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) posted the fastest time, earning the first yellow leader’s jersey. The following day, the race continued with a 157-km stage from Lourinhã to Queluz. Portuguese rider Francisco Campos (Team Tavira / Crédito Agrícola) won the stage in a sprint finish, outsprinting Daniel Cavia of Burgos-BH. Rui Oliveira (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) took over the overall lead after Johansen lost time on the final climbs. On the fifth stage, a 17.4-km individual time trial between Anadia and Águeda, Johansen secured his second stage win of the competition, finishing 30 seconds ahead of Tiago Antunes (Efapel Cycling). Axel van der Tuuk (Euskaltel-Euskadi) finished third. Following the time trial, Alexis Guerin (Anicolor-Campicarn) moved to the top of the general classification, holding the yellow jersey with a 1 minute and 12 second lead over teammate Artem Nych. Tiago Antunes sits in third place, 1 minute and 52 seconds behind Guerin. The peloton scheduled a rest day before the sixth stage from Santa Maria da Feira to Peso da Régua.
