Colombia earthquake kills hundreds and triggers national emergency FAST-MOVING

A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake in Colombia has caused widespread devastation, with the latest reports from the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) indicating at least 281 deaths, 3,971 injuries, and 379 people missing. The disaster has destroyed over 10,000 homes and significantly impacted infrastructure, including hospitals, schools, and airports across departments such as Chocó, Valle del Cauca, Risaralda, and Caldas.

In response, President Abelardo De la Espriella has declared an Economic and Social Emergency to expedite reconstruction. A new mechanism called 'Fondo Milagro' has been established to manage state, private, and international resources for rebuilding essential services like clinics and roads. International solidarity is emerging, with Conmebol and the Colombian Football Federation pledging 1 million dollars toward recovery efforts.

In the Chocó department, Governor Nubia Carolina Córdoba-Curi announced the formal conclusion of the search and rescue phase in San José del Palmar after the last missing person was located. Meanwhile, the Mexican government has successfully repatriated 36 Mexican citizens who were in vulnerable conditions in Colombia following the tremor.
