On August 12, 2026, a fire broke out on the KMP Putri Yasmin ferry in the Lombok Strait while the vessel was traveling from Bali to Lombok. The incident occurred during the early morning hours amidst rough sea conditions with waves reaching up to 4 meters. Rescue operations involving naval personnel, helicopters, and other vessels successfully evacuated 212 people. One fatality was confirmed, and at least 12 individuals required hospital treatment. By August 15, search and rescue operations entered their fourth day. While 212 passengers were declared safe, authorities expanded the search area to include the waters of Nusa Penida, Bali, to locate four missing passengers: Yasir Arafat, Selvina Rambu Mayi, I Made Sutarjana, and Slamet Yulianto. The Mataram SAR Office deployed three specialized units to cover the eastern incident site, the coastline, and southern waters. As the operation entered its sixth day, of August 17, the search area for the four missing individuals continues across an expanded further. area of approximately 3,650 square nautical miles. The operation utilizes Indonesian Navy deployed a Cassa NC212-200 aircraft from Squadron 600 to conduct for aerial reconnaissance, covering approximately 3,650 square nautical miles south of the incident site and extending south of Java. Maritime teams utilized Rigid Inflatable Boats to search north of Lembar Port, while for maritime searches, and ground teams intensified searches along patrolling the coastline northward from Tanjung Karang, coordinating with local residents and fishermen to assist coastline. Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi stated that the vessel was deemed seaworthy based on its last inspection in June 2026. The government is currently awaiting a formal investigation by the search. National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) to determine the cause of the fire. Officials are also conducting a thorough verification of passenger manifests to address potential discrepancies between recorded data and the number of people successfully evacuated.
